Hi all!
I'm feeling pretty used up this week, so here are a few bits and pieces.
I just realised none of them are about lockdown but I thought of that subtitle so I guess I have to say something about it… uhhh… well it’s national cocktail week (or something), and the hospitality industry are feeling very aggrieved that their business are suffering despite actually being very safe places to be with all the precautions they’re taking. I actually have no idea to what extent these precautions really work but it’s worth considering.
I’m actually about to go to the pub so I’ll let you know.
The Slang Heard Round The World
Some slang you might not hear regularly, including:
poc
Brazilian Portuguese. A queer person; usually a gay man. The term initially referenced the click-clack, or “pock-pock” sound made by heels hitting the floor. This used to be a derogatory term on Brazilian social media, but it no longer has negative connotations.
Love this term. Queer onomatopoeia, reclaiming, reduplication(?) — it has everything!
Rooms
I'm probably late to the party on this, but isn't it weird seeing e.g. journalists just in their houses? Feels like our whole world is now being run by shit youtubers in their rich parents' houses. I know I know, "Always was." but still — it's going to be weird seeing them pretending to be glossy professionals again. I've seen your messy bookcase mate you don't fool me.
Haunted
You know what's a weird music video? This:
I watched it just randomly as part of some research for a newsletter a few weeks back, and it's stuck at the back of my head since. It's got a very 'I'm a music video' vibe, enough to not seem unusual or anything, but it also actually makes no sense at all? Feels like reading bad machine-learning generated text — it feels like reading but then you finish and realise it hasn't actually said anything coherent at all. Like, I defy you to tell me what's going on here.
Immunity by Clairo
I actually can't get enough of this album. Bags & Sofia are definitely killer tracks but the whole thing holds up well. And did you know it was co-produced by Rostam? The sound actually reminded me a little of Rostam's Bike Dream before I knew this, itself a great sound!
Hope your week was a little more relaxing than mine! xx
