Hello! I'm still alive. And I'm launching something new. It's called 0DE5. In this email I'm going to give you THE PITCH and then also share some other thoughts and stuff below.
0DE5 is a guidebook for coders who want to dig deeper into computing.
I think computing is really fascinating. In the past few decades many people got into software engineering because they too felt that fascination — but haven't quite gotten to the exciting stuff. Perhaps their bootcamp or degree stuck to the surface, and their jobs since then didn't dig much deeper.
They might wonder — wasn't this supposed to be more exciting? Wasn't the world full of interesting problems waiting to be solved?
Good news — it is! Perhaps more than ever. That's what 0DE5 is about — becoming the kind of person who can work on the most interesting problems, talk confidently with the best minds in the field, and perhaps even make their own contribution.
More practically — it's a Youtube channel where every video comes with exercises and extra material. Taken together, the videos make up a collection of themed courses.
That will take many years to build of course — right now it's almost nothing.
My first project for 0DE5 is about the core tool of the software engineer — programming. Think of it as a companion to the classic intro to code course — it will take you deeper into what programs are, how they work, and how we build them. It will be organised around six ideas — memory, instructions, syscalls, functions, structure, and cognition.
I'll be posting new videos weekly. Starting this week! With a video that says all of the above, plus introduces those six core ideas.
(Hot tip — if you want to see me run the debugger in extreme sped up motion, flip forward to 25 minutes in.)
If you like the idea and want to support it, I'd really appreciate anyone who signs up for a membership. It's £$€10/month and for that you'll get members-only content on every weekly upload, plus no ads on videos and the reassuring knowledge that every day I get up I'm thinking about how to help YOU become a great hacker.
If that sounds fun, here's the membership page.
(Also please let me know if the Stripe integration works, I think it does but it’s against the rules to test it in production 😱 I promise it will charge you AT MOST £10).
If not, follow along on YouTube and see if you like it. I'll be glad to have you!
OK — pitch over. I'm soooo glad to have the first video out because I actually really struggled with it! I have learned a lot though — much of it is just "don't sit so close to the camera why are you so close to the camera??? also stop mumbling!!!" Hopefully that rubs off. I have at least not given up yet.
That said — I will be shutting down Tech Job #1 in its current form — I didn't manage to do much good with it in the current market but thank you to everyone who spent time speaking with me about it and I hope I managed to provide some useful words at least. I hope 0DE5 will help some of the same people, those who are trying to boost their skills to a higher level.
Some other things in my life:
Have you ever wondered, does Kay even lift? Well now I do! E and I got ourselves a PT and I am shocked by how much fun I am having and also how much I have to tell everyone. I am also comically bad. Last week we were doing... Turkish get-ups? And I got SO annoyed at just toppling backwards constantly. E did not have any such trouble.
I'm re/playing DOOM. I'm trying to get used to streaming because at some point I'll do it for 0DE5 also, but right now I'm just streaming me killing monsters for an audience of 1-2 mysterious strangers a couple times a week. If you like that sort of thing, subscribe here for notifs when I Go Live.
Here's a little tune for you also.
Hope you're doing good, let me know if you like!

Hi Kay, I found your intro to 0DE5 thx to the youtube algorithm knowing me very well and im so excited for this project it looks so great!! i really love your outlook wrt interesting problems waiting to be solved and like, holding onto a deep wonder for technology, your intro video was such a breath of fresh air cuz its so easy for ppl to get jaded these days ;v; great vibe and really looking forward to more!! ^-^
Been watching your YouTube series.
I'm a web dev by day, but seeking something deeper and more meaningful in embedded systems.
Really enjoying your content, and your new edu tech 0DE5 project looks really intriguing.
